SE3308 : The Barnsley Canal (disused)

taken 7 years ago, near to Gawber, Barnsley, Great Britain

The Barnsley Canal (disused)
The Barnsley Canal (disused)
This section of the canal ran from Barnsley to Barnby Basin; it was finished in early 1802 and closed in 1953.
The vandalised sign reads "supported by the Countryside Commission". That body ceased to exist in 1999 and the canal and its towpath appear to have been neglected since that date!
