Outline of the old St Margaret's church
The outline of the old church as established by archaeology has been marked out in narrow gravel strips. Several burials have taken place within the area since it was demolished in the 19th century.
Old St Margaret's tower, Lee
The remains of the west tower of the medieval (probably 15th century) former Church of St Margaret at Lee consist of the ground and part of the first stage of the tower, the rest of the church being demolished in 1813. It was replaced with another, which itself had to be demolished after less than 30 years due to subsidence. The remains of the old tower are now a grade II listed building (List Entry Number 1193159) and the surrounding graveyard is an “archaeological priority area”. The tower had become dangerous and ivy-covered before being cleaned and made safe in 2010: the outline of the old church has also now been marked on the ground. The present parish church (listed grade II*) is just across the road.
