NT1474 : Carlowrie Castle

Carlowrie Castle
Carlowrie Castle
The castle is well screened by trees, and will be more screened once the recently planted ones have matured. For the moment, there are a couple of gaps where recent storms have thinned the screen enough to get a glimpse from outside the fence. It was for sale in 2010 if you had 3,750,000 to spare, but is no longer on the market. It was built in 1852 for Thomas Hutchison, wine merchant and Lord Provost of Edinburgh, who bought the estate from the Sinclair family in 1850. The new castle was designed in the Scottish baronial style by David Rhind.

Update, 27 October 2012. My thanks to David Clark, who tells me that it will be reopening in 2013 as a 'luxury experience'. LinkExternal link
