The New Forest Pony is one of the nine recognized British Isles breeds but has an unusual background for a native pony. The earliest record of horses in the New Forest dates back to 1016 when the forest was a royal hunting ground. Since then, many attempts to improve the breed by the introduction of other breeds. New Forest ponies graze throughout the New Forest and registered stallions are let out onto the New Forest between April and July to continue the breed.
