Railway east of Wolsingham
Railway east of Wolsingham
The rail route from Bishop Auckland into Weardale was reopened in stages as far as Stanhope as a 'heritage line' several years ago. It was only envisaged that trains would operate a passenger service but more recently the notion of using the route to carry away coal from an open cast site near to Tow Law was proposed and was accepted; the first coal train left Wolsingham on 16 June 2011. The trucks seen in the siding in the distance are the ones used. As might be imagined the proposals and reopening attracted a degree of local opposition, not because of the use of the railway but due to the transport by road of the coal into the east end of the village.
