Beamish Museum - winding engine
Beamish Museum - winding engine
This is the Crowther type single cylinder vertical winding engine that has been re-erected on the Beamish site. It worked a short distance away and was moved complete with house as one of the early exhibits at this open air museum. This is the top floor with the single crank, flywheel with band brake and the winding drum with ropes windinng onto wood planking.

When I first visited in the early 1980s, the public was allowed up here but this was a low season escorted visit with the museum's keeper of collections, now moved to the National Railway Museum.
