The Underlying Reason ....
.... for the existence of the causeway to Cramond Island isn't altruism, or defence; it's sewage disposal. The causeway is the concrete which covers the pipeline, or most of it. At this point erosion has done its work, destroying the concrete and revealing the hidden pipeline.
