Shoulder of Mutton Green
Shoulder of Mutton Green
Curiously named open space beside Wickham Street. The green used to be the old village green of East Wickham and was known by this name, which was due to its peculiar shape, as early as the middle of the eighteenth century. It was also called Stroud Green. In 1866 the owners, Queen's College, Oxford, tried to enclose the land but in indignation the fences were torn down by the local inhabitants, which led to the land being purchased in 1877 by the Metropolitan Board of Works in order to ensure that it remained a public amenity permanently.
