Pond formed from the original Donnington Wood canal
At the bottom of The Incline, the former basin where the tubboats were marshalled to be loaded or offloaded between the different levels of the canal.
This originally served to connect coal pits at Donnington Wood to the road network near Pave Lane. It opened in 1768, and closed eventually in 1904, since when much of the visible course of the waterway has been lost to dereliction and neglect.
