Upwey Church, Pillar Base
Upwey Church, Pillar Base
This pillar inside the 13th century St Laurence Church has been erected into part(s) of an ancient font - very rare in Britain.

[Thanks to Miguel Torrens (Toronto University) and to a lady "elder" of the church....

"Old fonts get re-used in all kind of colourful ways. The two blocks may be part of an old font; the shapes make perfect sense; but maybe not an old font bowl. These are two possible parts of an old font: the pedestal, or stem, and the lower base of possibly a 13thC font. The upper block has the clustered shape so common in the period, with a broad central shaft and four outer colonnettes -in this case constructional- at 90-degree angles; fine so far; the lower base, octagonal, has the type of arches or panels that would not make much sense in a bowl if you turn this block upside down. The only way of knowing with any certainty would be to dig it up, which is of course out of the question. It might be possible to find out how much of the lower stone is buried in the present flooring of the church, which might give us a clearer idea of whether it is a base or an upturned bowl, but even that would take a lot of difficult and expensive work."].
