Buildings on east side of Boroughgate, Appleby
On the left is The White House, which is Grade II* listed - more important than the usual Grade II. It was built in the mid- to late 18C, allegedly for John Robinson, Secretary to the Treasury under Lord North 1770-82, and the subject of the phrase "before you can say Jack Robinson". The windows are an unusual shape with ogee heads. There are also little oval windows in the side wall under the eaves. Next is the A'board Inn, Grade II listed, built in the late 18C. The house joined onto it, also Grade II listed, is dated 1851 and is said to by Gothic in style. However but the drip mouldings over the windows and the chimneys are more like Tudor. The barge-boards are pure Victorian. The house on the right is a late 18C house of red sandstone, Grade II listed.
