Ancient oaks on Ashtead Common
Ancient oaks on Ashtead Common
It is said that on Ashtead Common there are more than 2,300 veteran pollard oaks, reckoned to be between 300 and 400 years old. Centuries of pollarding - severe lopping at a height of perhaps eight feet - results in all manner of grotesque deformities, as in the case of the two veteran oaks seen here.

Ashtead Common is a National Nature Reserve, owned and managed by the Corporation of London: LinkExternal link
