Work at Hyde Theatre Royal
Work at Hyde Theatre Royal
Work is being carried out on Hyde Theatre Royal. It looks as if the wall on Henry Street is being repointed in places. The boarded-up windows are being fitted with metal sheets with vents. The Grade II listed building is still at risk but a trust has been set up which hopes to buy, restore and reopen the theatre. Heritage photographs can be found at LinkExternal link
Hyde Theatre Royal (Onward)
The theatre opened on 3rd November 1902. A cinema was added in 1911. In 1972 live entertainment ceased at the Theatre Royal Hyde and a part of the stage and two dressing rooms were used to accommodate a second cinema. In 1992 the Theatre Royal cinemas closed completely The reason was fraud beyond the knowledge of the London owners and the theatre manager, which led to closure as a liability. In 2000 the Theatre Royal was given listed building status LinkExternal link and a Building Preservation Trust formed to save it. It was registered in 2001 with Companies House, as Theatre Royal Onward. using the wording of the Hyde Coat-of-Arms. In 2002 Theatre Royal Onward became a registered incorporate charity and, in the Theatre Royal's centenary year, a new era of its history began. The theatre is currently owned by a property speculator but the Trust have plans to purchase the building and revitalise it as a venue for theatrical productions, weddings, conferences, dance shows, dinner dances, live music, commercial business launches, art exhibitions and other commercial and community events.
