SZ1191 : Under the pier

Under the pier
Under the pier
Looking along the underside of Boscombe Pier close to high tide. First proposed in 1884, the pier was originally opened in 1889 by the Duke of Argyll. But, like most piers on the British coast, it was partially demolished during World War II to combat the threat of invasion. The pier then remained derelict for a several years and was fully reopened in 1962, then in 2005 it was deemed unsafe and closed again. Following major refurbishment the pier re-opened in May 2008, in 2010 the National Piers Society voted it "Pier of the Year".
