Colesbourne Park
Colesbourne Park
The original manor house at Colesbourne Park was demolished in 1957, and its replacement built on the same site, though the setting remains the same, with with terraced, balustraded lawns fringed by mature trees. Henry John Elwes of Colesbourne Park, after whom one of the principal snowdrop species in British gardens, Galanthus elwesii, is named, amassed here one of the finest collection of bulbous plants in the world, though he also planted many trees, some now of record size. Today Colesbourne Park, under the present owners, Sir Henry and Lady Elwes, and their garden manager, John Grimshaw, is once more famed for its snowdrops, and boasts more than 100 varieties. Snowdrop days are organised in February, though in 2012, the snowdrops were already blooming in late January.
