Furzy Cliff and Bowleaze Cove
Furzy Cliff and Bowleaze Cove
The open grassy and park-like cliff top of Furzy Cliff gives a wide panorama of Weymouth Bay.
This is looking towards Bowleaze Cove, behind which is the striking art-deco style Riviera Hotel; this was built in the 1930's and is now Grade 2 listed.
In the 1970's this was owned by Pontins Holiday Camps. The first week of the season in the spring was usually given to Dorset Red Cross who then ran that week as a holiday for disabled people; I went once or twice as a volunteer carer, very hard work but immensely rewarding and very enjoyable.
The building is on the lower slopes of Redcliff Point in SY7181; behind can be seen the top of White Nothe in SY7780 and in the distance is St Aldhelms Head in SY9675.
