This Palladian style country house, built 1776 - 1783 for Sir Francis Sykes, only narrowly avoided the destruction that befell many a country mansion after WW2.
Following a period of dereliction and wartime use as a barracks and prisoner of war centre it was restored by Lord and Lady Illiffe LinkExternal link and is now cared for by the National Trust.
