In 1399 Sir William Swinburne purchased lands in Stamfordham, and the Swinburne family have had a long association with the area. The market-cross was erected in 1736 by Sir John Swinburne, for a former market held in the village NZ0772 : Market Cross, Stamfordham Village Green
