Brimpton Lane
Brimpton Lane
Brimpton Lane is a byway open to all traffic, which bears north (just behind the camera) to join Back Lane. It lies across what is known locally as Brimpton Common (there is another piece of common land alongside SU5662 : Aldershot Lane on the other side of the main road). However, this is not common land as such: it is instead an allotment for fuel, awarded to the parish at the time of the inclosure of Woolhampton in 1815. The parish was empowered to rent the land, allow it to be grazed or dug for peat, or planted with trees for fuel. In practice, before inclosure, it was common land; it has never been inclosed, and it has all the characteristics of common land. But it is not registered common land.
