Part of Ditherington Flax Mill in Shrewsbury
This rare survivor is under scaffolding as part of its renovation and redevelopment. Built in 1796/7 as a Flax mill it is notable in being a very early cast-iron framed building and therefore the 'grand-daddy of skyscrapers'.

The iron framing was an innovation intended mainly to reduce the liklihood of a fire - a real concern when handling and processing flax, due to its very highly inflammable nature - rather than intentionally furthering the development of multi-storey buildings, but the technology seen here in early form led to the development of steel-framed skyscrapers, especially in the larger cities of America and worldwide.

Thankfully this building and its ancillary buildings are now safe in the hands of English Heritage, who are overseeing its salvation and redevelopment into a complex of apartments, offices and shops.

Meanwhile locals and visitors can admire the process of that redevelopment of a much loved landmark that adds a great deal to Shrewsbury's already rich architectural heritage.
