There were a lot of these on stumps and dead wood. They are about 2cm diameter. A correspondent has informed me that it is "Lycoperdon pyriforme - the only British puffball that grows on wood. Translation of 'Lycoperdon' is 'Wolf's fart' - not a lot of people know that!" - see LinkExternal link .
