Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags are a spectacular example of geology in a city setting, being remnants of volcanic activity in early Carboniferous times, about 350 million years ago.

Much more geological detail of the volcanic rocks is given in the chapter ‘Arthur’s Seat’ by G P Black in ‘Lothian Geology, An Excursion Guide’ by A D McAdam and E N K Clarkson (Scottish Academic Press 1986).
