Chatham Dockyard Main Gate
Chatham Dockyard Main Gate
The main gatehouse into the historic dockyard, off Dock Road, Chatham. It was built in 1722 and the Royal Coat of Arms above the arch is that of George III. A large muzzle-loader cannon, probably a 32 pounder, has been buried breech-down as a bollard to protect the corner brickwork. (The photograph does not show the companion cannon-bollard on the left side of the arch)
