Dunstall Castle
Dunstall Castle
A folly on Dunstall Common built for the 6th Earl of Coventry in 1766. It was designed by Robert Adam and in a letter dated 17th September 1765 to the Earl he refers to 'Drawing of the ruin for a visto from the house. I think it might be built to have a good effect at a Distance at no great expence, as there does nor require much delicacy in the workmanship.'(sic) (Source: The Coventrys of Croome, Catherine Gordon ISBN 1 86077 139 4) Adam was paid 5 for the drawing. In 2009, Dunstall Castle along with the follies of Pirton Castle and the Panorama Tower, all on the Croome estate where acquired by the National Trust who has undertaken a restoration programme on all three.
