How wrong can maps be? The 1:25,000 map marks the densest of long established Sitka plantations as open ground to the west of West Knockbain Wood. At least the 1:50,000 and the most detailed mapping on this Geograph site has recognized the wood. As you pass along the track from the brilliance of the light aside broadleaved trees into the darkness of the Sitka you are reminded of Tolkien and Mirkwood. The track marked on the 1:25,000 map to the north of here is currently an illusion - even in winter.
