Hartington Station looking south 1967
Waiting for a train which would never come. The station was opened in 1899 and although passenger traffic finished in 1954 the goods facilities at Hartington remained until 1967, a few months after this picture was taken. The railway was constructed for double track in the hope that the line would prove an important through route to the north. However, this heavily graded route, running over the limestone spine of the Peak District prevented this dream coming true, but some stations, like Hartington, were provided with double track as passing loops.
