SO9897 : Course of Anson Branch Canal

taken 12 years ago, near to Willenhall, Walsall, England

Course of Anson Branch Canal
Course of Anson Branch Canal
This is where the Anson Branch Canal left the Walsall Canal. It is filled in here, but the canal bed continues beyond the trees in the centre of the photo. I went up here in my boat in 1971.
Although little used then by boats, the canal was kept open to supply cooling water to Walsall Power Station at Birchills. When that closed in 1982 it spelled the end for the canal too. The Monarch's Way now uses the old towpath.
