Woodbank House (detail)
The crest is that of Clan Gilmour, and is one of the additions made by William Ewing Gilmour to the eighteenth-century building; see the WoSAS link in the end-note. The Clan Gilmour motto also appears here: "Nil Penna Sed Usus" ("not the pen, but its use", i.e., what matters is how you use it). The same motto appears in nearby Alexandria on the former Institute for Working Girls (now a NS3880 : Masonic Temple), whose construction was funded by the same William Ewing Gilmour.

See NS3881 : Woodbank House (detail) for a wider view, and NS3881 : The ruins of Woodbank House and NS3881 : Ruin for more distant views of the whole building.
Ruins of Woodbank House
See LinkExternal link at WoSAS for a detailed description, and LinkExternal link (at Canmore) for a selection of aerial views. From at least the fourteenth century, the site was called, with some variations of spelling, Stuckrodger/Stuckrogert, or similar; by the nineteenth century, it had been renamed Woodbank House. In the twentieth century it was the Woodbank Hotel, then the Hamilton House Hotel, before falling into ruin.
