Black Lair
Black Lair
For more on this mass of rock, see NS3974 : Black Lair. Although Black Lair is mostly covered in seaweed, some bare rock is exposed. Allowing for the greenish algae that adheres to even those parts that are free of the larger seaweeds, the rock appeared to be largely a greenish-yellow sandstone, but there was red sandstone in a few places.

Along the shore from Ardoch (NS3676) to Ardmore (NS3178) and beyond, the Old Red Sandstone that makes up much of the shore occurs, in a few places, with similar greenish-yellow material.

Visible behind Black Lair is Sandpoint (NS3974 : The shoreline at Sandpoint), in the middle distance, on the left; also, NS4074 : Castle Quay housing development; in the central background, NS4376 : The Long Crags; double-peaked Dumbowie Hill LinkExternal link behind the taller floodlight pole, right of centre; and part of NS4274 : Dumbuck Quarry, at the extreme right.
Black Lair
A large, dark mass of rock, particularly prominent at low water, located not far out from the shore, just to the west of the area where the River Leven empties into the Clyde. It measures about 70m (E-W) by 40m (N-S). For a similar local use of "lair", see the discussion at LinkExternal link on the old place-names Big Lair/Layer and Little Lair/Layer, which referred to features in the south-east bay at Ardmore Point.
