The fascinating and extensive remains at Jarlshof are seen here from the car park of the HU3909 : Sumburgh Hotel. The remains are in the care of Historic Scotland LinkExternal link and are well worth a visit if you are in the Shetland Isles. The most prominent feature from this perspective is the Laird's House (on the left of the image) which is the most recent building on the site, dating from the C16th.
Look at the shared description below and see numerous other photos of the site. (Click on the word "Jarlshof" above the shared description to see other relevant images)
Jarlshof is a fascinating excavated site on the very southern tip of the Shetland Islands near Sumburgh Head.
The site encompasses buildings from most of the ancient historical periods. Amazingly these have been kept separate such that they start with neolithic dwellings on the eastern side of the site and spiral around in a clockwise fashion through Bronze Age, early and late Iron Age, 2nd & 3rd century wheelhouses, Viking, Mediaeval and finally the C16th Laird's House. This represents a truly remarkable 4000 years of history on one site.
