75-77 High Street, Manchester
An exceptionally ornate building - "showy" says Pevsner - in sandstone and red brick. For once there is more of the former than the latter. There are also polished granite columns, plenty of carvings and very grand entrances (SJ8498 : Detail of 75-77 High Street, Manchester). The style is Venetian Gothic. Built c1875. Grade II listed.
It was built as a warehouse. An imprint of a later incarnation as a shop remains in the form of lettering above the windows describing its wares (e.g. "China, Glass and Cabinet Goods"). A pizza restaurant, Dough, now occupies the shop. A correspondent tells me that during the 1960s it was owned by the Casket family who ran a men's and boys' clothes wholesalers.
