Ambleforth Abbey & College
Ambleforth Abbey & College
The abbey is a Benedictine Monastery founded in 1802 and is dedicated to St Lawrence the Martyr. The college was also founded in 1802 and is now an independent co-educational boarding school with about 600 students. The school has not avoided scandal as some of the pupils suffered abuse by certain monks and staff over the years. The one time Abbot Basil Hume decided to ignore the problem resulting in the abuse lasting several decades!
Notable pupils include Basil, Cardinal Hume, Rupert Everett, Julian Fellowes, Antony Gormley, Lawrence Dallaglio
