The Hoffmann Kiln
The Hoffmann Kiln
The Hoffmann Kiln, part of the workings of the Craven Lime Company, built in 1873, is a truly remarkable industrial relic. Limestone was quarried from a scar above and stacked in bays within the kiln of which there were twenty-two. They were arranged in an oval pattern within the massive body of the structure. The chambers would be fired in turn on a rotating basis so that different chambers would be at different stages of production through a cycle that took around six weeks to complete.
