Remains of the ancient Roman west wall, Caerwent
These are the remains of the western gateway, one of four access points to the Roman town of Venta Silurum. Its double-arched openings were flanked by rectangular towers. Venta Silurum was not enclosed by defences until the late second century A.D. These were of earth and timber.
A century later, the gates were rebuilt in masonry, and a stone wall and ditch were built outside the original earth rampart. Because they controlled the main route through Venta Silurum, the west and east gates were larger than the north and south gates.
