Royal Exchange, Cross Street, Manchester
Royal Exchange, Cross Street, Manchester
Massive piece of Edwardian pomp, by Bradshaw, Gass & Hope, 1914-21. Grade II listed.
The trading between businessmen, manufacturers and agents for which it was built (at one point its eleven thousand members supposedly made it "the largest place of assembly of trades in the world") had more or less petered out by 1968, and since 1973 a significant chunk of the building has been taken up by the avant-garde Royal Exchange Theatre. Needless to say, there are also shops.
