The wooden posts spell 'IN' although that is probably coincidental. The protect one side of a manhole cover, probably a water or sewage main judging by the blue sign. Around it is a huge arable field. The footpath now seems to follow the definitive route, rather than the black dotted line shown on the 1:25,000 map.
