Taken as part of a "survey training exercise" set up by myself for the members of the 2009 Forton Lake Archaeology Project - me and a few willing relatives and family friends, in truth, but a fully competent survey team nonetheless, having already been well-drilled by the NAS and HWTMA in 2008.

In short, we conducted a recording of a section of the remains present - 7.50m in from the bow and up to the bow - using the datum offset method; a baseline was established running from stern to bow, before one member would hold a plumb-bob at each visible frame at its position on the baseline. Another member would proceed to run a tape measure from this point out to the widest point at which anything was present at this position on the baseline and call out to the member with the drawing-board its location - for instance, "frame at 7.50m; going out 0.25m" or words to that effect.

This would then be drawn up onto graph paper (for this particular exercise, we used Imperial-measured paper, however for the majority of our work to date we've used the more modern stuff); the end result, if all went well, would be a drawn record of the remains as if seen from a "bird's eye" viewpoint.

As it happened, this did all go well and we were all set up to begin fieldwork on June 20, 2009, our recording beginning with a clinker-built vessel just north of MMS293 in "Mud Cottage Lake".

This photo was taken by Richard Nagle, who I lent my Pentax digital SLR camera so he could take on the role of "project photographer", as I was involved with the fieldwork. I am in possession of the photos he took on this occasion, however I do pride myself on a gentlemanly attitude towards life (or so I'd like to think), and so I'll hand him the credit here.
