Staplehurst lies on a Roman road, and the church dates from 1150. It stands on a hill that rises out of the weald.
The old font probably dates from this time. It was used as a cattle trough for years before being reinstated.
The South door has been dated to 1050, and has some of the oldest ironwork in England still in situ. It tells the story of the Norse day of Judgement.
In the 13th C the church was enlarged, the south aisle being added, and in 14th C enlargements and new windows were made.
An Anchorite's cell was built against the north wall with a small window into the chancel.
The Black Death struck in 1348, and building halted. The foundations of a new west tower were in place, and the Tower dates from about 1400.
By the 16th C the church was in a poor state. The original spire blew down in 1673 and was not replaced.
To boost the local cloth industry in the late 17th C, everyone had to be buried in a woollen shroud, relatives
needed a certificate to prove this.
The roof is a 19th C Barrel roof. Further alterations were made in 1853 and 1876.
In 1921 the 15th C chapel was converted into a War Memorial. It contains the chest tomb of Walter Mayney and his 2 wives.
