The magnificent former Central Station was given a new lease of life as an exhibition centre in 1986. Built 1875-80, the engineers Sacre, Johnson and Johnstone, for the Midland, the Great Northern, and the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railways. It has a massive segmentally-vaulted shed of wrought iron and glass (a span of 210 feet, only 30 feet less than St Pancras). Grade II* listed.
The station closed in 1967, and was converted in 1986 by Essex, Goodman & Suggitt. There are some atmospheric shots taken in the interregnum here: SJ8397 : Manchester Central station 1980, SJ8397 : A derelict Manchester Central Station, and SJ8397 : Inside a derelict Manchester Central Station.
