Since travellers often lost their way in bad weather, in 1697 the Justices were ordered to erect guide posts [stoops] on moorland tracks or at crossroads. This one dates from 1738 and is a Grade 2* listed structure. It uses 'long' miles - the front face is carved 'Huddersfield 3 miels.
