Chesters - a fortified Iron Age village
A well preserved hill fort in East Lothian dating from just before the Roman occupation 2000 years ago, now in the care of Historic Scotland. A complex series of ramparts encloses an area of 120 x 50 m, with traces of the foundations of 20-30 mainly circular stone buildings. It has never been excavated, but there are signs of later occupation on the original ramparts, suggesting occupation from the 2nd century AD. It is oddly sited since, although on a hillock, it is overlooked by higher ground. It is easily accessed from the track to Dalvreck Farm, where there is a small car park, from a road leading south to Camptoun from the B1377 near Drem. It is well illustrated by David McAfee’s aerial photo NT5078 : Chester's Hill Fort
