This view shows the small weir in front of the NS4175 : Witch's Tunnel. Above the opening, where railings are visible, is one of the paths that make up the Nature Trail (the woodland walks in Overtoun Estate). The foreground area on the right also lies on that path.
Witch's Tunnel :: NS4176

The local name for a tunnel, 164 feet long and 10 feet wide, through which the Garshake Burn flows beneath an avenue leading to Overtoun House. See Link for much more information about the avenue as a whole.

As noted there, the avenue, which was officially opened in 1895, had to cross the deep glen of the Garshake Burn here; to that end, an embankment was formed, consisting of about 50,000 cubic yards of material. The Garshake Burn was culverted through that embankment by means of this tunnel.

Overtoun Bridge Link is part of the same avenue, and dates from about the same period. By means of that bridge, the avenue is carried over the glen of the Overtoun Burn.

Overtoun House Nature Trail

Locally, the woodland walks within the Overtoun Estate are still collectively known as "the Nature Trail", in memory of the fact that they used to be laid out as a nature trail with numbered marker posts (the Nature Trail, made with funds left over from the Quality of Life Experiment, officially opened on the 26th of April 1980). New waymarkers were added, both here and in the adjacent Lang Craigs Woodland ( Link ), in May 2015. For more on the Nature Trail, see Overtoun House: Link
