Gorse (Ulex europeaus) is a common spiny shrub which grows up to 2 metres high to form dense thickets. The mature plant has no flat leaves but bears sharp, branched, furrowed spines. Coconut-scented flowers bloom in spring, followed by black, hairy seedpods.
