The Surprise View, Studley Royal
The Surprise View, Studley Royal
The so called Surprise View at Studley Royal, with Fountains Abbey in the background. It was called the Surprise View because visitors would have been led along the High Ride (north from here) among trees, with the view of the Abbey suddenly opening up in front of them from this point. In the foreground is Half Moon Pond, formed from the deepening and widening of the River Skell.
Studley Royal Water Garden

The water garden at Studley Royal is one of the best surviving examples of a Georgian water garden in England. The garden was created by John Aislabie in 1718.
