New Hall Place, Old Hall Street, Liverpool
New Hall Place, Old Hall Street, Liverpool
What a curious building. It resembles a giant's sandcastle, or a cubist interpretation of a pyramid. Its slit windows add to its redoubtable appearance, but, as Pevsner remarks, "from a distance ... its rugged bulk and distinctive silhouette contribute greatly to the skyline". Built as major offices for a large insurance company, Royal & Sun Alliance, it has been described as a Brutalist equivalent of the Royal Liver Building. The cladding is ribbed yellow-brown concrete (SJ3390 : Detail of New Hall Place, Old Hall Street, Liverpool). Built 1972-76 to the designs of Tripe & Wakeham [insert your own anti-modern-architecture joke here].
The tower behind, at 459 feet, is Liverpool's tallest building, West Tower (2005-07, by Aedas).
