The Derwent provided water power for many mills and this was one of the biggest.

Many used to associate Yorkshire with woollen mills and Lancashire with cotton. However Derbyshire produced a considerable quantity of cotton too.

The Derwent is an excellent fishing river. The Derwent valley is a tourist hot spot, and from Cromford through Matlock Bath to Matlock is one of the hottest parts.

This picture taken from the pavement of the A6 which follows this part of the valley through the gorge.

To think that only 50 years ago express trains would have powered up the eastern side of the valley en route from St Pancras to Manchester, and heavy goods road traffic through the built up area on the narrow west bank. And cotton was being produced, too.
