Commemorative sign on the Keelmen's Hospital
The Hoastmen's Company was the guild of coal traders at Newcastle and the employers of the Keelmen. It appears that funds for maintenance of the Hospital were kept in the control of the Hoastmen to stop them being used as a strike fund by the keelmen. Disputes between the two, mostly about the owners overloading the keels, were frequent.
