NS9880 : Kinneil House, from the south
taken 13 years ago, near to Bo'ness, Falkirk, Scotland
The country house of the Hamiltons, a tower house built in 1474 by James, the 1st Lord Hamilton. An adjacent palace was added in the 1550s by the 2nd Earl of Arran and his wife, Margaret Douglas. In the 17thC the whole house was largely reconstructed by the Duchess of Hamilton and her husband William Douglas, Earl of Selkirk. Eventually, however, it was abandoned and in 1936 was in the process of being demolished when wall paintings were uncovered in two rooms. The demolition was halted and the house is now a Category A-listed building in the care of Historic Scotland. The state of the building is such that general public access is not possible, but occasional tours are arranged and led by knowledgeable guides from the Friends of Kinneil.
