The Green Man (2) - sign, High Street, Swindon, Staffs
The Green Man may have been originally associated with pagan religions, but quite early on his representation appeared in Christian churches, and he also appears in many other cultures around the world. Primarily he is interpreted as symbolising rebirth, or renaissance, representing the cycle of growth each spring. Strangely he is almost always a man, although one would have thought a green woman would be more appropriate. The Green Man is also not uncommon as a pub name. Usually he is depicted as being surrounded by vegetation or even with vegetation growing out of him. The Green Man seems to have had a revival in popularity in recent times, particularly in the field of art. He maybe strikes some deep chord, possibly connected with the desire of some people to get back to nature, with "green issues" and the interest in what is called "New Age" and all that surrounds that.

The present sign has replaced the previous one, which was the usual Banks's sign with a golden lion. Although the pub has been called the Green Man for most of its life, the pub's web site mentions that it was known briefly as the Bridge Inn from 1879 (it is adjacent to the bridge over Smestow Brook), but by 1888 it had reverted to the Green Man.
