Miller's Dale limekilns
Miller's Dale limekilns
These were part of the Millers Dale Limeworks which opened in 1878 and closed in 1930 as the face was becoming unstable. Kilns such as these produced quicklime (CaO) in batches by burning off coal and limestone (CaCO3) in the pit of the kiln. The kilns were loaded from the top and drawn at the bottom. There are a large number scattered around of various sizes and states of repair.
